San Jose Sharks Side Step Avalanche–Takeover NHL’s Top Spot
The San Jose Sharks have been on a bit of a hot steak as of late. Last night they defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-1. With their 5th win in their last six games, the sharks have once again passed the Detroit Red Wings for first place in the overall standings taking the lead for the President’s Cup. The red wings and the sharks are engaged in an intense battle for the NHL’s top spot. The sharks have the best home record in the league with a mark of 48-14-10 and with 106 points have pulled to within two points of their team record set during last season. The red wings sport the leagues best road record at 22-10-5, so with 10 games to go in the regular season something has got to give. Will it be Detroit or San Jose who ends up on top, check back later for updates.

The way I see the battle for first place in the West between Detroit and San Jose is as follows. Detroit has 10 games left to play, 7 against teams fighting to enter into the playoffs, and 3 games against teams without any hope. They will play 6 games at home and 4 games on the road. San Jose will play 6 games against teams fighting to play in the playoffs and 4 games against teams with out any hope of going any further then to the end of the regular season. They will play 7 games away from home and 3 games on home ice. Detroit has a greater advantage over San Jose in scoring ,while defensively San Jose comes out on top. Gut feeling tells me it will be San Jose on top. CONGRATULATIONS to this elite team.
