Molson’s Younger Generation Interested In The Montreal Canadiens!

A new generation of the Molson family is considering the possibility of submitting a proposal to acquire the Montreal Canadiens hockey organization.  Geoffrey E. Molson, a director of Molson Coors brewing company and a Molson Coors representative on the Montreal Canadiens Board of Directors, made an announcement revealing his interest in acquiring the team after current owner George Gillette indicated that the team was for sale back in March.  Geoffrey also said that given the circumstances, he will not participate in the work of either of the two boards of directors whenever the issue of the sale of the team is under discussion.  Andrew Molson, Vice-Chairman of Molson Coors, will also remove himself from such discussions.

The Molson family along with the Coors family already owns a 19.9 percent stake in the Montreal Canadiens and the Gillette Entertainment Group.  The Younger generation of Molson’s seem intent on gaining full control of the Montreal squad.  The brother’s Geoffrey, Andrew and Justin are spearheading this effort.  No other member of the Molson Family or Coors Family is involved.  In fact their intent is to bid without the involvement of Molson Coors.

The Molson family, directely and through the brewery, has been associated with the Montreal canadiens since 1957 when brothers Thomas and Heartland Molson bought the team from Senator Donat Raymond.  During the period the family controlled the team, the Canadiens won 11 of their 24 Stanley Cups.

  1. I hope whoever takes control of ownership of the Montreal Canadiens has the strength to fire General Manager Bob Gainey as he is the main culprit in the demise of the current team’s play. This past season he went from general manager to appoint himself as head coach after firing Guy Charboneau. His decision to keep rookie goalie Carey Price in nets throughout the 1st series of the playoffs against the Boston Bruins proved to be unjustified but hopefully not damaging to Price. His inability to gain any help at the trading deadline as well showed the senseless thinking that he had an able team to advance into the playoffs. Let’s understand that he only made the playoffs as coach by the skin of his teeth. Time for change at the head of the team as his reign has not brought an success to this prestigious organization.
