It’s early in the season and the Canadiens are already looking to make more moves in overhauling their roster. Latest rumors coming out of Montreal are that GM Bob Gainey has a few possibilities in the works. Nashville Predators veteran centerman Jason Arnott and defenseman Teemu Laasko could be heading to the Canadiens as part of a big trade that would send brothers Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn, forward Tomas Plekanec and a second-round pick to the Predators. Montreal has been trying to unload the Kostitsyns ever since their off ice incidents with Russian organized crime in the city. Their on ice performance is the main reason for Gainey wanting to move the brothers, both are just not living up to their potential. Gainey is also talking to two other teams as well, the New Jersey Devils and the Phoenix Coyotes. The deal with the Coyotes is: defensemen Adrian Aucoin and Keith Yandle and a first rounder for goalie Jaroslav Halak, the Kostitsyns and Tomas Plekanec. The deal with the Devils is Cory Murphy and Colin White for Sergei Kostitsyn and Glen Metropolit.

After Nikolai Khabibulin took the Blackhawks to the Western conference finals some worried that with his departure to the Edmonton Oilers in the offseason that the goaltending duties would be well handled by Cristobal Huet. Well, it seems that some of those fears are now being realized. If backup netminder Antti Niemi continues to play well, and Cristobal Huet continues to struggle, there will be a change in goal for the Blackhawks. This comes after Huet, the No. 1, was pulled last night after just seven minutes into the third period, after allowing three goals on five shots.

It was business as usual last night in the NHL, although for four teams their game had huge playoff implications. The Anaheim Ducks and the Minnesota Wild got critical wins to remain in a very tight race in the western conference. In the eastern conference the Buffalo Sabres beat the Florida Panthers to pull within 3 points of the Panthers and 5 points of the final playoff spot in the eastern conference. Last night, the Panthers had a chance to create some breathing room between them and the Sabres for the chase for that last coveted playoff spot, but were unable to hold onto a two goal lead in the 3rd period. The Sabres came roaring back scoring 3 goals in under two minutes. The Sabres’ Maxim Afinogenov added an empty net goal to close out the scoring. With a 5-3 win and 2 points for the win the Sabres kept their playoff hopes alive.

In the western conference it seems that Anaheim is starting to click at the right time. They exploded for 7 goals against the Colorado Avalanche vaulting them into the 7th spot in the conference. Minnesota also got a crucial win last night beating the New York Islanders 6-2 keeping their playoff hopes alive. The Wild is just 1 point behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final playoff spot.

Some key games happening tonight: The Panthers have a showdown in Philadelphia with the Flyers and have chosen a poor time to be playing their worst hockey of the season. The Panthers are 2-5-3 in their last ten games. This will definitely not get the job done. The Panthers will need to turn things around immediately or they will find themselves on the golf course earlier then they would have liked.

News and Notes

The Montreal Canadiens recalled forward Sergie Kostitsyn from Hamilton. He was sent down a week and a half ago for his poor play. The Canadiens are hoping that a stint in the minors will help wake Kostitsyn up. If the Canadiens are going to make the playoffs and a playoff run then they will need all of their snipers playing at their highest level.

The San Jose Sharks lost in a shoot-out last night but got a point out of the game. That allowed the Sharks to retake the overall lead in the NHL from the Detroit Red Wings.

Check back later for scores and updates on tonight’s games.
